What is virtual reality?

Virtual reality (often just called VR) is the name for computer technology that makes a person feel like they are somewhere else. It uses software to make images, sounds, and other experiences to create a different place so that a user feels like he or she is really part of this other place. That other place can be a real place (to take a tour in another country, for instance) or imaginary (to be in a make-believe game world!)

What is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the ability of a computer program or a machine to think and learn. It is also a field of study which tries to make computers "smart". AI can be used for successfully understanding human speech, playing difficult games (like Chess), and self-driving cars.

How do engineers, scientists, and doctors use these tools to do their work?

AI can help doctors and medical workers provide safer, better care by allowing them to look at digital recreations of patients before treating them in real life. VR can help doctors practice their surgical skills by using software to practice medical procedures and surgeries. For example, some VR programs allow doctors to perform practice surgeries based on a patient's MRI or ultrasound scan. This can also help doctors explain the procedure to the patient, which can improve trust and the doctor-patient relationship.
